Tomoo Misaki

Sr. Researcher / Sr. Manager at NRI - Nomura Research Institute

Tom Misaki started working in the IT Industry at IBM U.S.A. as a member of the Computer Science Department at T.J. Watson Research Center.  After 14 years as an IBM Scientist, he returned to Japan and joined Nomura Research Institute in 1993. At Nomura, he held various positions in Technology Division, Securities Industry Division, and Data Center Business Subsidiary.

 

He received his B.A. in Computer Science from Brown University and his M.S. in Telecommunications from Pace University.  Along with his formal education, Tom is a US DOE certified Energy Practitioner (DCEP) and a Microsoft Certified Trainer. Currently at NRI - Nomura Research Institute, an IT Subsidiary of Nomura Securities (known more as Nomura Bank in Europe). Tom is a member of the Center for Strategic Management and Innovations as the Sr. Technical Research and Sr. Manager.  His primary work at NRI is Japanese Expert for the ISO-IEC/JTEC1 SC39 under Japan National Body. Tom’s recent research areas include Green IT/ICT, Data Center Energy Efficiency, Building Ecology, Ecology Legislation, Green & Carbon TAX and Tariffs. Tom’s technology research lead 5 Japanese Data Center Patents, which could be applicable for the Energy Saving of Cloud Data Centers.

 

Tom participates in several organizations including Green IT promotion Council of Japan, Japan Data Center Council, Japan Aeronautical Engineers Association, and at most with The Green Grid. Tom is very actively involved in several TGG work groups in US, EMEA and Japan including the Technical Committee, Japan and EMEA Technical Work Group. Tom is now starting the Green Grid facilitated Global Harmonization – 2 program as a co-leader where the program will gather and examine different countries and region’s Data Center Related Regulations, Certification and Best Practice to learn each other’s. Tom is also closely working with EU CoC, version 2, BCS, US EPA, and US DOE, and was a member of EU DG Connects working group selecting KPIs for Data Centers in EU Region as an outside expert.

 

For his 5th year, at ISO-IEC/JTC1 SC39 for the Data Center Resource Efficiency, Tom is an appointed expert from Japan National Body, and from August of 2012 to May 2014, Tom has served as the Convener of Ad Hoc Working Group where all potential Data Center related ISO-IEC/JTC1 Metric (KPI) candidates were screened. Tom’s Ad Hoc Team has completed candidacy of about 15 new metrics (KPIs) from IT Equipment, Renewable Energy, Carbon, Water, Cost Base, Cooling System, as well as Energy Reuse. Those KPIs will be soon introduced as New Working Item Proposal by sponsoring National Body at SC39. Tom will continue his responsibility as an expert at SC39. Tom was a key coordinator to officially complete Japanese proposed “REF” – Renewable Energy Factor KPI, which was voted in March 2016 and officially became “ISO-IEC 30134-3”. Tom is currently working on two IT equipment related KPIs “ITEE” ISO-IEC 30134-4 and “ITEU” ISO-IEC 30134-5 along a Technical Report on how to mix use multiple KPIs for one Data Center for its annual performance and resource efficiency.
